About Us

Understanding and targeting the synapse to combat cognitive decline

The Jackson Synapse Targeting Lab is based at the UK Dementia Research Institute at Imperial College London, led by Dr Jo Jackson. Our research programme is dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of synaptopathy — the loss of synapses that closely correlates with cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

We take a multi-'omic and imaging approach to provide mechanistic insight into the vulnerability of synaptic components in neurodegeneration. Our work combines synaptic proteomics and transcriptomics, mass synaptometry, two-photon imaging, and imaging mass cytometry — primarily in human tissue, supported by iPSC and preclinical models for target perturbation.

Our mission: Synaptotherapies aim to restore cognitive function in combination with other treatments, ultimately alleviating the impact of dementia on society.
