Responsible Research

Our commitments to open science, inclusion, public engagement, and sustainability

Open Science

We are committed to making our research as open and accessible as possible. We believe that science progresses fastest when data, methods, and findings are shared freely with the community.

  • We deposit all datasets in public repositories upon publication.
  • Our multi-'omic synaptic atlas is being made freely available at map-ad.org.
  • Code and analysis pipelines are shared via GitHub.
  • We publish preprints ahead of formal peer review wherever possible.
  • We prioritise publishing in open-access journals and use open-access options when available.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

We are dedicated to creating a research environment that is welcoming, equitable, and inclusive. We recognise that diverse perspectives strengthen science and that systemic barriers must be actively addressed.

  • We actively work to recruit lab members from under-represented backgrounds.
  • We provide flexible working arrangements and individualised mentorship.
  • All lab members are encouraged to engage with EDI training and discussion.
  • We support the Imperial College Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy and UKDRI EDI initiatives.
  • We take a zero-tolerance approach to harassment, discrimination, and bullying.
We are proud to be part of a broader effort to make neuroscience research more equitable and representative of the communities we serve.

Public Engagement & Outreach

Dementia affects millions of families worldwide. We believe researchers have a responsibility to communicate their work clearly and to involve the public in shaping the science that affects them.

  • We participate in public lectures, science festivals, and community events to share our research.
  • We engage with dementia patient and carer communities to ensure our work remains relevant and grounded.
  • We work with the UKDRI and Alzheimer's Society to communicate discoveries to the public.
  • Lab members are encouraged to contribute to science communication through social media, blogs, and press engagement.
  • We welcome visitors from schools and colleges interested in neuroscience and dementia research.

Sustainability

Scientific research has a significant environmental footprint. We are committed to reducing our impact and supporting a more sustainable approach to laboratory science.

  • We participate in lab sustainability initiatives at Imperial College London and the UKDRI.
  • We minimise unnecessary plastic waste and recycle consumables where possible.
  • We consolidate orders and share reagents within the department to reduce packaging and shipping emissions.
  • We favour virtual attendance at conferences when travel is not essential, reducing our carbon footprint.
  • We are signed up to the Lab Conscious pledge for sustainable laboratory practices.

Our Commitment

Responsible research is not a box to tick — it is embedded in how we work every day. We are always looking to improve, and we welcome conversations, challenges, and collaborations that help us do better science in a better way.
